Looking for a telephoto (Canon)

I'm after a telephoto lens for my Canon 60D but I'm not sure how much I'll benefit from having one. I shoot people (mainly kids) and cars, then when I'm travelling I shoot everything really.

I have a budget of £600, are there any good lenses out there for this budget or is it worth me holding on and saving some more?
 
Zoom or prime?

If you're after a zoom then you can do a lot worse than a 70-200 F4 IS, or a 24-105 F4L if you want something shorter.

If you want a prime then the 135 F2L is very well thought of. Great as a portrait lens, but not so great as a walk around
 
I'm not too sure really, I'd never really thought about it but now I'm thinking more prime. I'll look at the suggested lenses and read some reviews - thanks for the suggestions.

Then don't buy one yet, wait until your sure you NEED one. Just enjoy using what you've got.

(On the other hand, if you MUST buy something I'd recommend Canon's f4 200mm L zoom, with IS if its within budget second hand).

Well when travelling I think I would definitely benefit from one but what usually happens is I see, I want, I buy and then hardly use.

I had a similar debate I wanted a tele zoom as I occasionally needed one when on trips etc so I decided I'd get something cheap second hand see how much I used it and then upgrade if necessary. I picked up an old school 70-210mm f4 and 5 years later it's still in my bag for those rare occasions I need some more length. Many times I've considered swapping it but it's never been worth it for the use I get.

Hold fire on big outlays buy something cheap second hand and see how you get on if you use it a lot then sell it in and buy the l series glass.
