Yes
So I have been shooting motorsport for almost 2 years now and my canon 55-250 has done me well for a budget lens.
I have been picked up by a drift team to cover them for the 2015 season and feel like it's time for a new lens.
I am using a crop body of can use either ef or efs mount.
I have been looking at the 70 - 200 f4L non is model which can be had for around £500 but a friend of mine says that is overkill for what I need and something sigma or tamron would be better for less money but I don't know.
Anybody got any recommendations?

I've used my sigma 150-500 for a couple of events. Its good if you can't get close but is it ever hard to pan at 500mm. Guess that's lack of practice. It doesn't stop down that much at 500mm but I was shooting around f8 to f10 anyway.

Just my 2 pence worth but see what the hardcore Motorsport toggers say ;)

The focal length of your lens will depend on how close you can get to the action. I assume you've been to the different tracks, what focal length have you been using. The canon 70-200mm f4 a great lens, my advance is to look secondhand you'll save £150-200 over the price new, as for overkill, that's what you pay for a better lens. The quality of the IQs speed of autofocus and performance are a step up again from the lenses your friends suggesting. So you really need to do a bit of research on the access you'll have to the tracks, assume that they will give you a media vest.

If you can afford L series lens then do so ... S/H may be the best bet some good ones always in for sale section on forum ...

You've had a very good couple of options suggested above.

I had the 70-200 F4 and it was a belter of a lens and certainly not more than you need...if for whatever reason you decided it wasn't for you, you can easily sell it on at a minimal loss.

Certainly 2nd would save you a good size of money...
