Looking for a New Lens to replace my kit Lens

I've currently got a 1000D and I'm looking at replacing the 18-55 non IS kit lens with something a bit better. My main reason for this is my favorite type fo photography is landscape and I find that I'm just not getting the sharpness I would like with the kit lens.

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive replacement. should I go for the same lens but the IS version? or would there be any other lenses you would recommend?

I think the IS version is much better quality - I used to use Canon and found it a nice lens.

On my 450d I went from the 18-55 non IS to a 17-85 IS and found it a very worthwhile upgrade without being big money.

I changed from the kit 18-55mm to the IS version and found it worthwhile, obviously if you spend more your going to get a better result but considering you can sell the kit one for £30 and buy the IS for £55 its definitely worth it.
