Looking for a lens

Hi, I'm looking to buy my 1st lens as I'd like a good portrait lens. I've only got the one 18-55mm lens that came bundled with my nikon D3100. I'm a real beginner, but want to know if this type of lens would be better to use than the one bundled with my camera to take photos of cars?
My parents run a charity and we hold a yearly car show to raise money to buy and give equipment to our local hospital, so I said I would take photos for the gallery for their website.
if anyone can give me any recommendations, it would be much appreciated. It's more important to me though to be able to take good portraits than of cars, but was just curious if a portrait lens would be good for car photography.

Any lens can be used for anything within reason. Just cos its a "portrait" lens doesnt mean you cant use it for something else.

I'd guess something like a 17-55 f/2.8, or a prime like the 35 f/1.8. Not sure how good that would be for cars though.
