How's you knowledge on exposure? If your confident in the use of aperture, shutter speed, iso and metering then the standard recomendation of 'Understanding Exposure' is probably a bit basic for you. If your not confident in these areas then it's a great read which I and many others have really found to benefit them.

if you buy a popular SLR you can get field guides and "for dummies" books on that camera and it will give you in depth detail on exposure composing etc. and tell you things about your camera you didnt even know you had.

I second the recommendation for Understanding Exposure. From there I guess it depends what kind(s) of photography you're particularly interested in. You can learn a lot from just being on here - although whatever I suggest it's probably best to do the opposite.

A third for 'Understanding Exposure'.

'Understanding Exposure' taught me a lot when I first started playing with a DSLR about a year ago. But if you already have a firm grasp of the basic principles of exposure, it'll probably not teach you much. That's not to say there won't be anything of any use to you, it's still a book worth having in your collection.

TBH, I learnt most from reading just about eveything in this very forum.

Its a war on tech and peace on auto
I just read on composition its great to see things clearly
good luck

understnding exposure sound like a very good choice going by how yo have described it.
also i may look into the 'for dummmys' books as my slr is very new to me and i know how good the books. im sure it will help me get the best from the canon.
thanks very much for all your input, very helpful;)
