I have lately been considering buying a good camera to start photography as a hobby since I find it very interesting.

I am considering buying the Canon 1000d since friends suggested that it is a good entry level dslr. Any disadvantages of this camera or possibly, is there any better camera within the same price range?

thanks

Have you tried other brands? for me a cannon would never fit my hands, and for some a nikon wouldn't, its worth finding what feels right and what menu systems you prefer, but i can definitely vouch for the nikon D200

Hi Terence, does your friend have a Canon- if so have a go of his to determine if you like using it. If you bought a Canon would he let you use some of his lens, this would be a reason to choose Canon. There are plenty of alternatives out there from Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc you just need to visit a camera shop and handle them- the 'big two' of Canon and Nikon are the most popular though.

Set yourself a budget and see what your money buys you. There's plenty of info and comparisons of kit on here, take your time reading. You don't need to spend a fortune initially and buying used means you won't make too much of a financial loss if you decide photography's not for you.

From personal experience- I bought a used Nikon D40 with kit lens for less than £150, used it for a couple of months, learned my way around the settings and I haven't looked back.

I got a 1000d about six weeks ago and love it, I keep hearing people asking whether the 1000d has too many limitations too be honest I think it's a great all round camera and because it's an entry level dslr there are bound to be more advanced cameras and I think most of us beginers get caught up in the hype about buying the best

I think the Canon 1000D should suit your needs if your starting out and would be a good camera to learn on. I suspect that you will soon enough want to upgrade if you really get into it. Maybe you could source a 1000D second hand as the value of them decrease more when bought new whereas if you buy seco0nd hand and need to sell it on you shouldnt be too much out of pocket.

I have a 500D (ehich I started on) and quickly came to realise that more depends n the quality of the lenses you own (as opposed to the camera body) so also give consideration to that.

Youll need to think about what kind of photography you want to get into (landscape, architecture, portrait, nature etc). Some types of lenses lend themselves to certain types of photography more than others.

Hope this is of help.

Cheers

I started with a 1000D back in June 2009 with just the original kit lens.
It took good shots for the package price. Then I bought an L lens to strap on and things changed dramatically, soon a 50mm was in tow and my photography started to really take of.

18 months down the line from purchase I was at the end of the line as to what the body would be able to do to meet my requirements.

I upgraded to a 50D which meets my needs and more!.

As much as the 1000D is a great capable camera, its functionality will die very quickly as you progress.
If you did something like the 450/500D that would last a lot longer.

Ken has a good point in the second hand semi pro camera. A complete different body size/style but worth it in the long run.

The Canon 1000D is an entry level camera and the new version released and is available in the market Canon 1100D, if you want to consider Nikon than Nikon D3100 is the best choice, now which one to choose completely depends on you, go to your local store try and handle these models and see which feels better for you and than decide which one to buy. All of the performs equally well.
