Hi Guys,

I used to have a canon 400D but circumstances led me to sell.

Now I have a budget of £500 maximum, and I am looking for another camera.

What do you guys recommend?

I was looking at a 450D in Jessops for £535 with two lenses, but people have suggested a 40D?

What about the 550D, is it better than a 40D?

Thanks.

You may be able to get a 50D for £500 if you look around. Is your budget for just a body or a body and lens?

Then for me its the 40D and 50mm f1.8. You should be able to get a 40D pretty easily at £400 and and 50mm f1.8 for around £60. Only bad thing about the prime lens is that there is no zoom, however you can easily crop in photoshop or any photo editing software. The lens is really sharp, cheap and most Canon guys have one in the Camera bag. ( Apart from me. :D )

I had a 400d and moved to the 40D - I did not think that it would make such a difference, but it did. Over the 4xxD 5xxD range I still prefer the 40D by far, but that is just me. I would get one with a small shutter count for £400 ish and put the rest towards some glass. As Andy suggests you could pick up a 50 mm f1.8. Even the 18-55 kit lens would do as a start until you can get better glass. I use a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as the main lens on mine and they go for around £200 used on these forums. I know this is over your budget but as I said even a 40D used with a kit lens would be in your budget and you can always upgrade the glass later when funds permit.

I'll throw a Nikon in amongst all these Canon guys....... Nikon D5000 kit can be purchased new in some places for £500.00. I've found it to be a great starter DSLR for the money :)

I wouldn't get a 50mm as my only lens unless you've used one before and know you could live with it. It's a nice enough lens, and would be fine as an only lens on a full frame body, but personally I'd find that situation a bit limiting on an APS-C body.

If you have about £100 left for a lens after buying a body I'd probably go for a second hand 18-55mm IS kit lens.
