A quick update on the above comments which have turned out to be wrong and confusingly correct
Apparently Vuescan does install drivers to work some scanners if no makers drivers are installed but it is some not all, there is a list of supported scanners on the Vuescan website with each one listed as being supported by Vuescans drivers or if the makers driver is needed.
So some of the older film scanners can be used with modern OS's and some even support the 64bit versions when the makers totally ignored it (Canon) also some canon scanners will not work on a 64bit system even with vuescan, but for Minolta and Nikon you should be fine.
Check the list out first if you are thinking of buying one of the older scanners, shame they are selling for stupid money at the moment.
I decided to go with the Plustek 8200i after finally finding some reviews that raved about the quality of the scans and manual carrier control is not an issue as most of my film is not mounted and I will only need to scan one or two from each sheet, mind you wading through the 20 odd years of slide films I have filed away to find those odd good ones will be a major task on its own.
