... just been browsing at a few lenses, im after one with a decent zoom and macro.

now ive seen some say APO? what is this? does it warent a near on £100 extra price tag?

does sigma fit fit nikon?

im not looking to spend too much on a lens if im honest ( not at the moment anyway, at least untill i understand them...)

on warehouseexpress it has sub headings that say
Digital ONLY and digital and 35mm...

is it better for me to get a lens that is for digital only or will having one thats meant for 35mm be ok?

theres this one

28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Macro (62mm) New

Nikon Fit £178.99

this one

28-200mm DG F3.5-5.6 (62mm) Compact Macro compact lightweight model New

Nikon Fit £168.99

or this one

70-300mm F4-5.6 Macro DG (58mm)

Nikon Fit
£97.99

which if im honest all look the same to me, but have diferent price tags....

i already have ( for a 35mm)

a nikkor af 70-300 4-5.6g lens
and a
nikkor 28-80 3.3-5.6g lens

do you think i can make do with what i have, and just buy myself a digital body. then get my self one of the above for macro work?

please guys your opinion would be great...

im a tad confused :help:

cheers

Matt

If you are on a budget then the Sigma lenses are pretty good for the money.

Your choice of lens depends on the sort of pics you want to take.

If you do mainly landscapes then look at the wide zooms like the Sigma 10-20mm.

A good all round lens is the 17-70mm Sigma and the 70-300mm APO lens is worth the bit extra you pay for it, APO stands for Apochromatic.

I have the Sigma 70-300mm APO and it does the job very well considering its price.

If you let me know what sort of pics you are going to be mainly taking I can help you with your options for lenses. :)

I have that lens DoubteT and it's great. I'm no pro photographer and I can't tell you what all the letters and f numbers mean but it takes shots like this:

on a D50.

APO stands for Apochromatic, it's a type of glass that is less prone to colour fringing etc. More likely to get you a good shot in other words.

Yes Sigma do a Nikon mount.

That price is very good and Kea-Photo have been around a long time so no problems with them. The only downsides are you might get stuck for import duty and vat and if there's ever a problem with the lens Sigma will not honour the guarantee. Sigma make very good lenses but sometimes their quality control lets them down, if you get a bad copy you'd have to send it back to HK for replacement.

The upside is I have one myself and it's great, never had a moments problem with it (had the non apo version before but got rid quickly as it was carp).

UK price is about £159

nice photos BBW, i like the duck!

@darksider. my main photography will be landscape, cars, still and moving, insects, animals like at zoos and what have you, birds . and also want to have a go at some flashy stuff too, but i will look into getting a wide angle lens at a later date.

so am just after a a lens thats very adaptable for the moment.

so i run with the standard kit lens the d80 comes with ( cant remember what it is at the moemnt) then ill get one like mentioned above.... i think:bonk:

cheers

I don't know anything about Nikon lenses but I would have thought what you have would be fine to get you started with a digital body.

The confusion about lenses takes a long time and a lot of reading to get over - even when you understand most of it the choices are still difficult.

Don't rush in to buying stuff. Look at review sites, read user opinions and lens test reports and eventually you might drift towards a choice :)

There are plenty more such sites but my bookmarks are Canon ;)

The 18-70 that comes with the D80 is a very good lens for the money. You probably need to spend £1k to get a better equivalent lens! :)
Joe is spot on here although if you wanted a real ydangle lens most people go for the Sigma 10-20mm so the 18 end of the 18-70 is a bit wasted - you could pair the 10-20mm with a mid range zoom like the 24-85mm (like the bargain one I am selling :embarrassed: - see my sig) - then you can cover the longer zoom range with the Sigma 70-300mm APO which appears to be the best in that price range ... HTH - Paul  & sorry for the blatant plug!

Hey, this forum's so good, I don't even to post my questions as they're already answered! :D

I can't advise Double T , but I can hijack the thread and pinch the information for my own use! Looks like the Sigma 10-20 will be my first lens investment; I went for the 18-135mm lens on my D80.

And I love the duck!
