Hi folks
The battery on our Panasonic camcorder died a good year ago. The idea was that instead of buying a new one we would just use phones, compact or even my Canon 60D. However, this hasn't happened very much so we are looking at getting a new one. As I have a Canon DSLR the first thing I've done is check their camcorders. This looks awesome but I'd like your input p!ease: https://www.parkcameras.com/p/1633129W/digital-camcorders/canon/canon-legria-hf-r706-white

Now,with the Panasonic I had awful trouble with file upload because it had a weird file format, I forget what it was now, so could only use their programe. Lightroom won't recognise them. I have done a quick Google and it looks like Lightroom will read the file formats this camcorder uses, but if someone can give me a definite that would be great.

Also if anyone has any better suggestions for around the same price, £200, that would also be great.

Many thanks in advance, Mike (y)

Home movies, holidays etc. I will also let the kids use it for little plays, puppet shows etc.

In my view, stability is everything. I'd look at either getting a 3-axis gimbal for your mobile phone (assuming you have a good one) or a DJI Osmo.

Thanks
I'm more after a traditional sort of camcorder, if that makes sense
It doesn't really anymore - just another thing to require a special charger and expensive batteries that need careful management if they are to last.
The only 'better' thing you get with ye olde camcorder is a big zoom - best used sparingly.

I've a Canon camcorder. Not the one your after, but one that uses the same file formats. Yes Lightroom will handle the .mov files and according to the Adobe web site the AVCHD ones as well. Lightroom isn't he best app for video, but is OK as preview, and filing app which is what I use it for. You are better off using a dedicated video app for editing, I think the canon comes with one, although I've never used it.

Thanks (y) Yes I'm only intending to use it for filing and viewing. I've got Premier Elements so would use that for editing.

Better zoom
Less Ailiasing
Proper Audio connectors
...

You should consider looking at Canon's XA or XF series of camcorders. They offer XLR audio inputs, have full manual control options and overall are very easy to use. If you're familiar with Canon products, such as your 60D, the XA and XF camcorders will feel similar. With all that said they currently are not able to capture 4K video, if that's something you consider important.
