Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM.

This was my first upgrade from the kit lens on my 400d.

I also have the 50mm 1.8 too.

Canon 55-250mm will complement the 18-55mm well and is a very nice lens for the price (less than half the price of the 70-300)

Second the 70-300 IS USM..absolutely cracking lens! Yes its rather expensive..but its a lot better than the kit jobbies.. Plus just keep looking on the forums/bay and you might strike a bargain :) Paul

If you want a 70-300mm, get the Tamron SP AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 Di VC USD, Tamron also give 5 year warranty.

If you are on a tight budget, the canon 55-250mm is a bargain.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, looks like i need to save a little more money :)

Thanks

Nick

I bought a 55-250mm whilst I was in Hong Kong and I am really pleased with the results. They can be had for less than £150 new online. I find it very sharp, even wide open.

The 70-300 IS USM is an absolutely cracking lens or if you want longer the 100-400L, in addition to his two I have also had the Tamron 70-300 and after a week changed it as it was useless, the colours and IQ were shocking.

The old tamron 70-300 was very poorly rated, the new tamron 70-300VC gets much better reviews.

Once bitten, twice shy as they say. Personally I would rather spend the money or recommend Canon gear so that you can be confident you won't need to upgrade your kit again.

I appreciate money is tight, but you can get some good deals on a second hand 70-200 F4 L if you can stretch or save a bit longer, its a great lens.

If budget it the main concern then the 55-250 would be a decent choice, but if you can stretch the budget a bit then I'd agree with this advice to go for a 70-200 f/4L over the 70-300.

The 55-250mm is a great lens without the costings of some of the better quality ones. Just depends on what your prepared to pay.

55-250IS Very sharp and is superb value for money. Can get used on this forum for £125.

I second the 55-250 IS. Great lens for the price.

I would also go for the new Tamron 70-300 VC over the canon equivalent if you want to shell out a bit more

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I might go with the Sigma 70-300 APO, It seems cheap and a nice buy to me :)

Thanks for the help everyone, I ended up getting a 55-250mm canon from a guy on here. Will be reviving it Monday :)
