Yes
I've got a requirement to do a timelapse, however it needs to be one that can be sped up and slowed down, therefore it's video recording only - im using a 550D

The issue I've got though is that I'm limited to 4GB in size, thanks to the file format Canon use, which gives me around 13 minutes of footage. Any ideas how to get a longer video, or is this just not possible?

Other than reducing the recorded resolution/quality settings, no. I believe there is a limit on the length of time cameras can record for (around 30 mins iirc) due to tax reasons. Otherwise they are classed as video cameras which must be in a higher tax bracket. A dedicated video camera might be your other option...

install magic lantern. it's free and makes a 550d a hell of a lot better!

You can do variable speed time lapse in post if your software supports it. You can do it in FCPX but not sure of others. The 4Gb limit is per file. The camera will continue to record but make multiple files which can be joined together.

OK thats interesting. Is there an option somewhere for this? I tested it out last night, and the video just cut off after it hit the 4GB limit.

Both my 5dlll and 6d have a 30min limit on filming. The manual states that when the 4Gb limit is reached it will start a new file. Looks like your camera has different protocols. As magic lantern has an intervalometer built in you are better off using it.

Test run started in a sunset over the back garden. Shall see how it goes!
