Hi all,

I’ve been asked if it’s possible to shoot a Timelapse for a minor bit of building work which will take 2 days - approx 20 hours of labour.

Is this possible with a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 or Sony A7IV and if so, would there be any risks to the cameras in terms of overheating or burning out from being on for 10+ hours at a time.

I’m thinking 1 photo every 2 minutes which will give me 30 photos an hour or 600 for 20 hours.

I cant speak for those cameras but it is possible I'm sure. You may need a battery bank to power the camera though. I cant see overheating being an issue as the cameras only taking a pic every so often.
My biggest concern would be security of my gear.
Have you looked for timelapse tutorials on youtube for help? I'm guessing they are there.
Sorry I cant help more.

Is this internal or exposed to the elements? Also, what quality do you need?

It will be inside, so protected from the weather.
Umm I would say 720-1080p is fine.

I have checked the Osmo pocket 3, and the only issue there is, although I can shoot for an infinite time, the interval can only go upto 60s

Overheating should not be an issue because the part that uses a lot of energy causing heat build-up - taking the photo - isn't happening very often. Cameras can be on continuously for hours for events like weddings or gig photography, so just a couple of pictures a minute should not be a big deal.

OK, maybe consider action cams, rather than expensive options. A brand I've used in the past is Mobius, but they seem to be harder to source now. Happily left them for three days of an internal event, with a USB power bank. Mobius is older tech, programmable with a text file on the MicroSD card, or computer connection, or in the past an iOS app. I set them up with the frame rate and resolution I wanted, and to start recording when powered up. Lining them up was tricky without the iOS app, I had to take some shots, then get those shots off the card.

600 frames won't be a very long video once finished - 2 minutes at 30fps. The Osmo Pocket 3 you mention above would give you twice as many frames so a 4 minute movie. At a GUESS (and it's only a guess), there's software that'll automatically remove every other frame should you need the shorter finished product.

Check out Brinno cameras. They make/made a number of cameras specifically designed for time lapse. Plenty of used ones around, many with all weather protective cases.

Buy one, sell on afterwards.

Thank you all for your responses. So change of plan with the client. But undoubtedly I may be asked again.

2 minutes is plenty for what the client is after to be fair. But thank you for the advice.

I think the DJI may be the best option without having to purchase more equipment.

Although, buy used and sell on isn’t a bad shout either.

Once again, thank you all for the responses. I’ll revive this thread in the future should the need arise.
