I'm a newbie to all this...
What's the basic jist of getting a long exposure shot?
Or can anyone direct me to a tutorial?

Thanks! :D

Hi Dannii,
You will need to shoot in low light, you will need a tripod (or similar) to keep the camera stable, and you will probably need to focus the lens manually.

Mount your digital camera on a tripod

depending on what kinda picture you are taking, with night time lights car headlight trails Set your shutter speed to more then 2 seconds, this differs from different manufactures. Consult your instructional booklet for more information on setting the camera modes. Experiment with the different settings and choose one that you like.

if you dont have a shutter release use the self timer on the camera

Take the Picture

thats it in its basic set up, I am sure someone will come along with a more detailed explanation ;)

low light, tripod, high apperture, low iso preferably, and obviously a slow shutter speed

Light trails from cars really are not easy to do well

This is my best example this was hand held depending on what you are trying to achieve I would recommend setting up the tripod on the back seat getting it totally secure as you are going to have to contend with the bumpy roads without having to worry about the camera moving around also, I would suggest a trigger and then settings in the region of ISO100, f/11-22 and from 5-30 second exposures

Do you mean light trails of cars (rather than taken from inside a car)? A good starting point would be to find a busy stretch of local motorway/dual carriage way with a bridge over it that you can set a tripod up on. Ideally a stretch that is not covered in streetlights.
