long exposure-nightime

i am going to try some long exposure,and nightime photography,i have just bought a nd500 filter for the long exposure,s and a cable release,what i am not sure about, would i have to enable the exposure delay mode on my d90thank,s for any reply,s

Exposure delay mode will help or you could use live view which will effectively lock the mirror up anyway. If you are up to really long exposures, it actually probably won't make much difference but in 1/45 to 10s ish range it's well worth trying to minimise any mirror slap.
