London this weekend - Sunrise/Sunset opportunities?

Hi guys

I am in London this weekend attending a course all day Saturday but may have time for a sunset session on Saturday night (if energy levels allow) or Sunday morning sunrise before I head for the airport.

Apart from the obvious places (eye, tower bridge) can anyone recommend any locations that are worth a visit? I will be staying in a hotel in Kensington and catching the Gatwick Express about 8am on Sunday.

I will obviously be keeping an eye on the forecast (which is not the most optimistic at time of writing) but am prepared to change plans accordingly.

Actually, you COULD/SHOULD be in luck regarding colourful sunsets and sunrises over the next few days.
An area of high pressure will be building and settling over the UK for the next few days. When that does occur, it always has the effect of trapping dust and pollutants in the atmosphere above us. Combine that with broken and slow-moving cloud layers trapped in air inversions and you have all the ingredients of a "fiery" sunrise/set.
That's my take on things. Only a few minutes ago I was just looking at the weather charts and thought about the sunrise/set prospects . . . and then I came across this thread.
 
Thanks Ian. I am pleased to see that weather forecasts for the South are as poor as those given for the Highlands! :lol:

Local B&B's complained of mass cancellations following the BBC forecasts for the area over Easter. OK it wasn't brill but not bad either! and certainly good for photography!

Just had a lovely pre-sunrise sky down here this morning.
 
I know you want to avoid the obvious but think about Sunrise shots taken from one of the Bridges. I often drive over London Bridge at dawn. Sunrises looking toward Tower Bridge are shots I've promised to take myself. Great urban landscapes with the office blocks lit up.
 
My first thoughts were the obvious but then I thought about these.....

Battersea Power Station - For both rise and set
Hyde Park early for runners and horses
Buckingham Palace as sun will rise onto it....
Houses of Parliament....

And

My favorite but would probably need transport......The sun rising on the buildings over at Canary Wharf......have been there a couple of times when I have needed to be in the office EARLY

If I think of anymore I will edit.....have done this before........

I am thinking of heading here and walking up to river to get Dome but may change mind.
 
The sun sets over the houses of parliament when they are viewed from the South Bank. You can get nice shots from the London Eye looking towards the houses of parliament walking up to Westminster bridge and from on top of the bridge itself. Here is my first attempt at such a shot to give you an idea. I'm a beginner so by the time I actually got a shot that I was happy with it was getting quite dark but hopefully this will give you an idea :)
