Where would you recommend as a good place in central London to shop for a DSLR - somewhere that will give me good advice & service, and not just try to take my money?

Or indeed anywhere you would avoid..... ;)

new oxford street. which is tottenham court road end of Oxford street, and just continues on. Jessops and Jacobs there, plus a few other in roads off of that.

Tottenham Court Road has some brilliant camera shops (connected to Oxford St and New Oxford St). I had literally hours and hours of advice and the chance to play with most of their cameras in Spectrum, which is right next to Warren Street tube station. They're Nikon specialists, but they know about and do EVERYTHING. Unfortunately they've recently taken on a new member of staff who I wasn't impressed with, and he's really put me off going back.

On the same (western) side of the road, further down (by EAT), is a shop with a big selection of second-hand kit in the window. They're very good in there - I think I'd prefer to go to that one next time. Across the road from there is a smaller shop that seems to be run by people with a limited command of English, not to mention photography.

Thanks so much everyone - this is all very useful. It's also good to know the places to avoid! :-)

Having the chance to play with some cameras is important. I'll give some of these a go.

As long as you stay away from Jessops, you will be fine :D
