Ok, I admit, I couldn't think where to put this thread so I stuck it in here, but it is photography related so

Basically, I fancy a trip to London for photography purposes (both daytime & evening) and I'm wanting some recommendations for anywhere to stay that's cheap & walkable to decent photo opps

Usually, I bring the wifey and stay at the Millennium, Claridges or the Savoy - nice, but pricey as Hell and as I'll be without wifey there's no need to spend (who said waste) so much money on refinements

All ideas welcome :)

PS - to any mods lurking about... feel free (I know you do anyway ;)) to move this to a more appropriate forum as you see fit - thanks

Lastminute.com - most hotels in central London are walkable to photo opps and if you're not too bothered specifically which one you can normally save a fair amount (and pay less than for a travelodge type place) and stay in a decent place.

Okies - not used them before

Are they really 'last minute' - as in, you could leave it to the day you're going to travel down and book it then - or is that a bit too chancey

On the day is fine. Day before if you want piece of mind.

They were doing a 'secret hotel' deal for a while - don't know if they still do - where you could save something like 75% of the normal room charge provided you didn't mind not knowing exactly which hotel you were booking for until after you'd booked. I got a £250 per night room for £75.

Which was nice.

We've used this and got a really good deal at The Threadneedles hotel (they even give you personalised 'In Residence' business cards) right opposite Bank of England. http://www.theetoncollection.com/content.aspx?pageID=430

Great location for the city (very quiet at weekends) St. Pauls, Southbank etc.

lastminute.com or laterooms, I find lastminute is usually cheaper, although you pay up front.

Anywhere in zone2 tube is going to be a matter of minutes from anywhere else!

This is a pretty good location near Imperial War Museum/Waterloo which is handy for the west end and city, Southbank etc. An American chum stayed there and said although it was pretty basic it was fairly cheap.

Also handy if you want to head to Brixton for some more "gritty" photos!

I always stay at the Club Quarters Trafalgar Square (AKA Grand at Trafalgar Square). It's in the middle of everything. It usually costs around £120 but can sometimes be had for as little as £90, which is pretty good for a 4 star in central London.

30 seconds walk to Trafalgar Square, 2 minutes walk to the Thames and 5 minutes from Big Ben and Soho. Personally, I wouldn't want to stay near the Tower, it's too far away from the West End.

Dont do the bus it was 5 long hours - Globe have some cracking prices though

I use London Town for booking hotels when I'm there. :) Great site and some brilliant bargains. Last week my boss got a cracking deal on The Bloomsbury Hotel :)

I always like to say in Premier Inns if possible when I'm in a big city. They're not fancy, but they do do the basics well - clean, bright, airy bedrooms; good comfortable beds; air con and heating that you can actually control; power showers; and good breakfasts. There's one right on the South Bank, next to the London Eye, in part of what used to be called County Hall. Great location.
