From Sharpes Rifles

Richard Sharpe:
Gimme a pick-lock, Cooper.

Cooper:
Pick-lock, sir? Catch me with a pick-lock!

Patrick Harper:
They did, Coop. But when you got out of Newgate prison, you got another set, and that's the one the officer wants.

Cooper:
Do I get it back, sir?

Richard Sharpe:
Trust me.

Cooper:
It's very hard to trust a man who wants to borrow your pick-lock, sir.

I got really in to it when I had an enforced rest period after back surgery. There aren’t many padlocks I can’t pick now given a bit of time but I eventually found I enjoyed making custom picks more than the actual picking. It’s another of those hobbies that can become a bit of a rabbit hole :)

I find it very interesting, especially the new and wonderful designs to prevent lockpicking. It's quite scary how insecure your home probably is.

A lock is only as good as the item you are fixing it to!

On our last trip to Ireland, the main gate lock was a bit of twig, bent in the middle! They had left the keys for the house inside the open door! :)

On night shifts I use to pick the padlocks on various tea lockers using a paper clip. I'd help myself to a tea bag or spoonful of coffee and leave them 20p.

As a practical joke I opened somebody's uniform locker and emptied it by drifting the hinge pins out, then replacing them once we had fitted the doors back on.

Combination locks were a doddle.

A lock picking lawyer video popped up on my yt feed a few days ago, how to break open just about any padlock with a couple of spanners in a few seconds.

I was into it for a little while. I got interested after I had to hire a locksmith - he got through a "secure" font door faster than he could charge my credit card. Literally walked up to the door to look at it. I thought he was going back to his van to find the right tool. He'd snapped the lock and was getting his iZettle :)

Once locks get tricky I find picking them slightly frustrating when I know I could get in fast with a bump key :)

It was really interesting for a while though - it's one reason why I fit these on all external doors :) If I ever need a locksmith, he'll earn his money.
