lochwinnoch rspb

I have! Its a great idea. I visit a lot of RSPB reserves but the majority of hides are situated too far from the action for most photographers. Fine for birders who are content to observe birds through digiscopes, but harder for us snappers. What I like about the Lochwinnoch photo hide is that the feeders have natural branches just to one side and the birds often perch on them before jumping across. You get a good cross section of 'garden' birds visiting the hide, plus of course the woodpeckers. The staff of Lochwinnoch have put a log into the ground, baited with suet - which the woodies love - and they allow for the classic (and somewhat cliched) 'woodpecker clinging to birch tree' photo. Definitely worth a trip. As a RSPB member, I wish more such photo hides existed. Incidentally, while you are there take a walk along the path to the first screen and photograph the wood mice that steal the stray seed that drops to the floor from the bird feeders.....
