Myself and my other half are thinking of a few days away in February and we are looking at Loch Lomond. Obviously it isn't the best time of year to go weatherwise but we are just happy to have a break away.

Hopefully I'll be able to take a few pics whilst we are there but I was just wondering if there was much to do/see around the Loch Lomond area, in the winter, that is none photography related? Does anyone have any tips/suggestions?

Many thanks in advance,

Richard.

Where are you staying?
If it is at the southern end of the loch you are only an hour's drive from Glasgow.
Depends what you are looking to do.

Not booked anywhere yet, but have found some nice cottages/lodges with availability around the shoreline. One of them is on the southern shore I think, the others maybe a bit further around (links are all at home)

Don't mind what we do, just get out and see stuff. We both don't mind stretching our legs but neither are major hikers. Waterfalls, nice views etc

Any places of interest around there? Are the whiskey distilleries further up north?

Thanks for your help so far.

Main whisky area is up in Speyside, but you will be very near a lowland whisky distillery:-

BTW - southern end of Loch Lomond - Balloch & Alexandria area are not all that salubrious, if you get my drift. I'd push on up the lochside for a place to stay.

There is a good waterfall (Falls of Falloch) on the River Falloch which flows into the very top end of the loch.

Providing you are prepared to use your car, there will be enough to see and do within about 1 to 1.5 hours drive. Most of the villages around the loch are fairly small. I would not recommend Balloch, as it is the first stop that attracts people from the greater Glasgow area and it can become crowded, especially at the weekends. Somewhere like Luss, would be good base to explore further. It depends on what you are looking for, but I would recommend exploring north of this area, as the scenary is stunnng. Inverary and Oban (which is a bit further) are worth considering, and the drive up will provide plenty of photo oportunities.
Tarbet (another good place to stay), which is north of Luss, has boat trips, but not sure about this time of the year.
If you wish more action, then head south to Glasgow, but like many other cities, it is advisable to stay to the tourist spots, particulary if you are using expensive camera gear.

Arclight and Peter10d, thanks both for the info, especially for the bit about the southern end of the Loch.

I'll have a look at the links and see what I decide.

Thanks again,

Richard.
