I have recently been able to take some images of local football. A local paper would like to have an image to put in the paper. They have told me that they do not have funds to pay me but will give me a credit. Can anyone help is this normal?

Also does anyone know the normal rate for insertion?

Many thanks

Well its perfectly normal for the tight fisted editors to say they dont have funds and will give you a credit and its perfectly normal for them to be lying ********ters as well, a paper simply would not survive if it didnt have funds, all newspapers have a budget for photography be that sport or news based photography but if they can get it for free and someone is willing to give it for free just to see their name "in lights" then thats how they will operate.

Once you give it away for free you will find it increasingly difficult to get paid for your images.

There are dozens and dozens of threads discussing this very issue and they all end up with the same answer, DONT GIVE YOUR IMAGES AWAY.

Must... resist.... joke....

Phew.

Sounds a very familiar story to be honest. Been told that a few times.

ask them for a free advert in the paper the same size of the image, bottom right of an odd number page, near the front. Oh how we laughed.......... no fee - no image. Simples!

I wonder if they have a budget to pay the printers?

Thanks for the advice, I wil ask about an advert but if they do not play ball I will resist sending images.

Same up my way aswell, papers are happy to take "credited" images but claim no budget, I simply don't give in

Although asking for an advert once went down like a lead balloon, was told "they won;t do that"

Same round here, local rags always say 'no budget'. My feeling is that since most of these locals end up in the recyling, what's the point apart from personal kudos? No pay no pic.

Nope - end up in my BBQ to get the kindling lit.

Advert idea not worked, so I have taken advice and told them no picture.

It is a bit hard for me to take, when you start out it nice to see one of your pictures in print, but I see where you are all coming from it is easy to say no budget to hope and get cheap pictures.

Good on you Ian... I had a similar thing with a Super League club wanting new kit photo's doing for free....I recomended that they get someone else in to do it.

Wakey by any chance mate, ive just been contacted by their retail dept to shoot all their stuff for their online store, they did however ask me for a price, i just told em i dont do "product" photography and pointed them to their own official tog.

If its not them and youre interested ill let you have their contact email from their retail manager.

Good for you Ian, pat on the back coming your way ;)

I refused to supply free pics to my local paper for over a year and guess what. Last week a request and a paid back page pic and asked for a couple from this coming Saturdays game.

They will pay if they want pictures

I was paid (rather than there standard rate) a day rate to cover a game as the editor felt it covered my time better.

There is funds there, its just a case of trying to get them to part with them
