Yes
I've been out today with a local pro-tog who runs Canon equipment. During th shoot he was connected directly with his Laptop computer and with each shutter actuation the image was downloaded direct to his laptop for immediate scrutiny.

Can this be done with Nikon gear/software,
specifically the D2x in my case ?

Cheers
Frank

yes it can

edit opps not software you need you need a wireless transfer adaptor, warehouse express sell them either £380 or £600 depending which one your camera needs

Cheeers Dave, look forward to that.

In the mean time I'll do a google on it and see what crops up.

I dunno whats happening with software these days, Nikon Capture camera control came free with Nikon Capture 4 edit software like....2 years ago.
If thats not happening now, it must be some ruse to eek every last penny out of us.
I dont use NikCap much these days, but I do if I have to shoot tethered.
I half expect it to be free (NikCap 4 & camera control) that is, somewhere on the interwebz, since its no longer supported.

edit, its actually the single most bestest thing besides f/2.8 I ever.....aquired

the software you require is camera control 2 - You can get a trial version from here.

It works well giving full control of the camera from the PC and the camera connects via USB.

Camera control pro 2 costs £129 and is required for the D3 & D300. However I think the D2x will work with camera control pro (Not 2!) and that only costs £29.

If you want wireless transfer of images, you could look for a secondhand WT-1. THey go for around £100.

You can then use some FTP software like ITP pro from Pixmantec to "receive" the images on your laptop, and instantly review them.

I use this on my D2x/WT-1 combo and it works well. If you want to control the camera, then you will need Camera Control Pro rather than the setup above.

Have downloaded and installed the Trial version of Camera Control Pro from the Nikon website.

:'( However I have connected my D2x to the laptop via USB cable then when I start the software it tells me "no camera is connected", have surfed around and can't find any help on how to connect and setup, anyone know what to do ?

Thanks for all the help so far

You may need some Nikon software installed to add drivers so the operating system knows a camera is connected. Not that I know anything about Nikons :)

My copy did that also with my D300 - if you start camera control then click help then 'Check for software updates' thats what sorted it for me.

Its something in the camera menu, err...

on my D200 its set up menu (spanner) > USB > change from mass storage to PTP

I'd tell you why that is but I'd have to read the instructions, I'm a bloke, so....its just not happening:lol:

:):):) All done...........loading version 1.3.0 as suggested was the final piece of the puzzle, so in summary if its any use to others

This is what I did to setup my D2x for thethered operation.

1. Download and install version 1.0 of Camera Control Pro from Nikon website (free trail download gives you 28 days to evaluate the sioftware)

2. Started Version 1 and clicked "help>check for software updates". Version 1.0 was detected and I was asked I wanted to upgrade to version 1.3.0.

3. I took the upgrade and followed on screen instructions, it took me in total about 20 minutes to download and install.

4. Started my D2x went to the spanner menu and set USB to PTP

5. I plugged in my USB started CCP my camera cam up and thats it, popped the button on the screen and camera took a shot then displayed it.

Now I need to evaluate the setup and see if its going to be what I am looking for.
I have just bought a full portable/studio lighting setup, 4 bowens flash heads and all various bits to go with it and a battery Pak, so I'll start of doing portraits tethered and will be able to see bigger images and make tweeks whilst on the shoot.

........can't wait

Cheers guys for all the help, what on earth would we do without 'tintanet'.......struggle I guess as we did in the past.

camera shops would have to get more people who knew what they were doing!!
