HI all, Im very new here and also new to photography.

I'm planning to buy a faster lens, and i can't decide which is better

they are

EF50mm f/1.4 USM
EF85mm f/1.8 USM

I always hangs out with friends at night. so i was thinking 1.4's better but 50mm is too near

Any advice?

If 50mm is too near then 85mm will certainly be too near...

Assuming you're using a crop body camera then I would look for a 30 or 35mm lens.

:agree: Do you mean the 50mm is not wide enough ??

Or do you mean the 50mm is too short - if so then either you need the 85mm or move further forward if you def feel you want the 1.4.

As with Nawty, are you using a crop body ?

If you gave an idea of what you're shooting with and lenses you have available currently, it will help with some recommendations.

Don't forget about the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) much cheaper and (assuming Canon) is a cracker of a lens for the price - around the £75 - 80

Both the 50mm & 85mm are handy portrait lenses.
If you're not buying them specifically for studio portraits, I'd suggest the 50mm as its small, fast and pretty good to walk around with.
