Hi everyone well this is my first picture of what is hopefully going to be a successful photo 52 challenge.

The weather wasnt great in this part of the country this week and my sister has been visiting so I didnt have a great deal of time to spend on this and suddenly thought opps its already Saturday.

So this is my first picture taken this morning at Battersea Dogs home.

Hiya Lissa

Well done on your first of this 52. Great original take on the theme and I really like the photo, especially the angle at which you have shot this agains the cloudy sky.

Well done and good luck with the rest of the challenge.

Cheers

Dawn :)

An original and effective take on the theme.
I like the DOF and that's a good sky.
Looking forward to seeing your week 2. Cheers, Patrick

Nicely exposed and a truly original idea. I like it

Love the idea, but can I ask what processing you've done to it? Looks a tad overdone to me. Appears to be quite a halo around the signpost

Cracking idea though

Like the idea. Just wondering if there was an alternatve angle that the photo could have taken from with a different background?

Good start to the 52

HDR toning, I have to confess I like the slightly over cooked look I know its not for everyone.

Well I could have taken it from another angle with some windows in the background. I thought this was the nicer angle and I didnt have much time we were there to go look at the dogs mainly.

Did you come away with a dog?

I do like HDR too, I just think that there's a very obvious white 'halo' around the edge of the signpost and the trees.

Yip there is thats the way I edited it, I like how it looks against the gloomy sky. Like I said I like the overcooked look its not for everyone but photography is an individual thing.

Thank you for your comments.

At the moment we are living in an apartment so cant really have one right now but we are looking to move into a house this year and rehoming a dog is at the top of our list for 2011.

We fell in love with a beautiful 3 year old American Akita who has been there for awhile.

Love the idea, love the gritty feel to the photo but feel it would be an exceptional photo if the halo didn't exist, but as you say you like it and it's sometimes about personal preference.

Really original take on the theme and great pic. Well done.

I did try it without the halo after Simons comments and it looked awful a horrible plain flat image I would not have been happy posting.

The theme for week two is New so I decided to take a shot of my new boots which I got in the January sales for a tenner. What a bargin.

week two - new by purpleskyes, on Flickr

Reasons I like this image: I like the way its captured the true colours of the shoes and they compliment the background colouring.

Reasons I dont like this image: The background could be alot better and I also feel maybe the picture could be more in focus?

I might reshoot it later in the week if I have time but I doubt I will work and uni makes for a very busy person.

Just commenting on the NEW post -

Overall it's a good technically, focus wise, it looks good to me certainly on the TP post (can't comment about 100%). Of course you could be talking about the Depth of Field of the image (i.e. how much of the image appears to be in focus), in that case it's very subjective. Personally I like shallow DoF (not much appearing in focus caused by a wide aperture, small f number), but others want the opposite.

I would suggest if you do a reshoot, (and I would encorage it) you experiment and try different shooting positions (lie on the floor, shoot down) and try different angles from the subject. I would also suggest experimenting with different apertures (f numbers) and see what effects you achieve and which you like.

hmm shoot 2 didnt go down very well I took some pictures today I am going to have a look through them to see if any of them are suitable for this weeks theme. I will hopefully get a better response to week 3's image.

Good luck for week 3 everyone.

Hi Lissa,
I think it's a very good shot of your new boots:-)
However, as a bloke, it doesn't... excite me as a subject, although if you like them, that's good enough for me:-)

I do like the way just a few of the rivets (i know they aren't... but that's what they look like!) seem to have caught the light, but think if the buckles did too, that would be better.

I agree with the backdrop, it's too similar a colour to the boots for them to stand out (imho) but hey, just look at my pics! - yours are so far loooads better!

I am looking forward to seeing your week three shot:-)

Hiya Lissa,

Sorry I missed you week 2 theme, it slipped through without me spotting it. Well done on the take of the theme, and a great pair of boots, indeed a bargain.

I think you have the focus spot on, and personally I would have taken it from a lower angle and a shallower depth of field.

Overall a good effort, I look forward to seeing what you produce for week 3.

Cheers

Dawn :)

This week theme is style and I decided to choose a style of photography probably an easy option but I enjoyed it.

I choose photojournalism the definition of which is: Photojournalism is all about telling a story about a particular event or incident through a single photograph.

granny and bird by purpleskyes, on Flickr

In this image is my cousins great grandmother, she lives in a nursing home and feels quite lonely. This is the first time she met their pet cockatiel Billy and she just fell in love.

I think that the image does tell this story very well you can see how happy and taken she is with the bird. She started talking about getting one of her one to keep her company but they said it would be too much work for her.

The "story" is told really well in this shot I think, the look on her face is perfect. Great take on the theme :-)

Thank you for the feedback.

What a lovely story and you can tell she is just enthralled with the bird

What a lovely photo, you can really see the happiness in her eyes as she looks at the cockatiel :)

Thank you, I was rather pleased with this picture. They have printed this picture for her so at least she has that with her at the nursing home.

Hiya Lissa,

What a lovely photo and take on the theme.

I am sure the great grandmother would be well pleased with the photo.

Love the way it is such a natural pose and you have captured the colours and skin tone well.

Well done.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Lissa

Good shot I like the take on the theme and you have carried it out superbly well done looking forward to the next one week 4

What a wonderful portrait. So full of character - she looks like a lovely lady.

Excellent lighting, focus and composition. Nothing I would want to change in this pic.

That is a really lovely photo. Photography is all about capturing moments and that has been brilliantly done here :)

Thank you for all the lovely comments on my style picture I was very pleased with it.

Sadly I am not very pleased with my week 4 picture for "open" but its going to have to do as I am too busy this week to put any real effort in even at the weekend I am working 8am until 6pm and I am going out for the day on Sunday.

So here is my week 4 "Open" Entry

Hi Lisa, I like the idea and can see what your going for, unfortunately for me the DOF is too shallow. I'd like to be able to see more of the ring pull in focus.

Nice idea though

DOF is too shallow for me too... but the idea is fab and with such a close crop with more DOF it would be a good shot...

I'm waiting for my first busy week too... I've been ok so far making time at the weekends... but I know it wont be so easy as the summer approaches!

Hiya Lissa,

I like your idea for this weeks theme, but agree mostly with what has already been said. I appreciate you have been busy, and I am sure we will all be in the same boat at some time throughout this 52, so don't be too harsh on yourself. The main think is you actually made some time to make an effort, and in my eyes, that is what counts

From a shoot perspective, I think it may have been a bit better if you had pulled away a bit from the tin, so as not to get too close, and perhaps gone for a bit of a lower angle, with the focus point being more on the tin pull rather than being on the lip of the tin. That way you would have got a DOF with the lip being a bit OOF, the focus being on the 'openess' of the tin and the mechanism that achieved that, with the rest of the ring-pull OOF.

You have given me an idea here of a subject to shoot, so I thank you for that

As TinTin has suggested, when a re-shoot card comes up and you perhaps have more time, this could be one to consider.

Like the idea though.

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Cheers

Dawn :)
