Hi,i'm looking for some advice on lighting setup for small events such as birthday's,graduation party's etc..i use canon DSLR's - 6D MarkII and EOSR6. I currently have a Speedlite 430EX.

In what way? To wander round and take people's pictures or to set up a portrait spot?

Welcome to TP BTW. :)

Welcome to TP.
As above: what I’d it you’re trying to achieve? There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

Thank you..actually both - i'd have a photo booth kind of setup and also need to cover the event itself that includes cake cutting

If you’re buying an actual photo booth, they include their own lighting.

If you’re trying to set up a ‘photo booth’ look using a pop up bg etc, you could use a couple of Godox AD200’s with pop up softboxes or shoot thru brollies.

For table shots, grab n grins etc; it’s horses for courses, some people are content with an on camera flash, bounced with a stofen or similar. I preferred a bit more flexibility, with hand held flash bouncing or direct, often with OCF to create a starburst for first dance, or to use as a backlight. Others set up a couple of off camera lights on stands to bounce off the ceiling as floods, there’s dozens of ‘right’ ways to do it.

The short answer is to think about a selection of off camera lighting, I’d recommend Godox for scalability (3 or 4). A couple of stands, a trigger, and a couple of brackets, softboxes, or brolly boxes. You can start w 2 speedlights, but adding AD200’s, then something like an AD600 to stretch your capability into lighting in bright sun would be ideal to cover all eventualities.

That's great info, thanks for the all details and your time.

I'd echo completely what Phil said here. When I first did this sort of thing back in the 70s/80s it was quite a feat, but things are so much easier (and lighter) now. :)

I prefer the Godox offerings too - I find a pair of T685s with an XPro (an XT1 would do) trigger are all I need for using 'out and about', but obviously the more powerful 200/300/600 will be much better if you need that extra power.

YouTube can be a great resource to see how other people are doing it - some make it easier than others, but they all get there in the end. (y)
