Hi all

After reading plenty of recommendations on here for Lightroom, I have started a 7 day free trial. The software seems fantastic, it automates so much of the raw editing that I have struggled with in the past. My current set up is an iPad Pro as I only have a very cheap laptop, however is the Lightroom software better on a laptop or is it very much the same.

hope that all makes sense.

Lightroom currently comes in two main versions - Lightroom and Lightroom Classic.
You can run Lightroom on a mobile device (phone, tablet) or on a 'PC' (desktop, laptop, Windows or Apple).
Lightroom Classic will only run on a 'PC' (as above), but does have more functionality - though as I mainy use Classic, and haven't used the mobile version for several months, I couldn't say what the differences are currently.

Note that there are a few different pricing plans for lightroom, so if you want access to Classic make sure you get a plan including that.
Additionally, the cheapest way to get it is to buy the 1 year packs from Amazon when they appear discounted (the plan I use, LR Classic + 20Gb, is ~£10/month, but Amazon will sell the same plan for £70/year from time to time) - you get a code from Amazon, then enter it on the Adobe site, and get 12 months credit added.

Lightroom on the iPad is about 98% the same as the Lightroom Windows / Apple app. The Lightroom (non-Classic) apps have a different user interface than Lightroom Classic, but almost all of the tools and sliders are present in all 3 apps. Lightroom on the iPad and the Lightroom (non-Classic) app are very much focused on cloud storage, rather than storing files locally, so make sure you get a 1Tb plan otherwise it becomes a complete pain managing your limited cloud storage.

The only things you're missing on the iPad are things like HDR and Panorama merging. If you don't do those things then the iPad Pro will serve your needs brilliantly. The iPad app has recently gained colour grading and advanced masking at exactly the same time as the desktop app.

I have been basically iPad Pro only for about 2 and a half years. I can't image going back to sitting at a desk and using a mouse to edit my photos.

If you haven't already, buy the Apple Pencil. It makes Lightroom editing on the iPad so much better. I have happily edited a full motor racing weekend's worth of images, over 2,000 shots, on my iPad with no problems.
