Lightroom - Problems reading photos

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Lightroom (v.1.3.1) not reading certain files. The error I get is a very helpful "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo."

This is happening with about 20 of the 4000+ photos in my library. I think I'm correct in saying that all those affected are JPEGs (whereas the majority of my other photos are DNG), they are on the same network drive that they always have been - and that all my other photos are on - and those that I've tried open fine with other applications.

I can't think of anything to try, and the error message has to be in my top 10 most useless! Has anyone had this problem before?

TIA,

Abs

Not something I've seen with images, but there could be a slight corruption in the JPEG header which is causing Lightroom not to be able to read the files. I'd guess the reason that other programs will read them is that they are more tolerant of errors.

I've had MP3 files not play at all in a piece of DJ software and then play fine in iTunes or Windows Media Player.

Try opening them in Photoshop or similar, then if OK, re save with a slightly different name. Then see if Lightroom will import and display them

Sorry for the delay in replying, and thanks for your suggestions. I didn't even get as far as opening in CS3 and saving again - simply copying the file directly and importing the copy worked.

I've noticed some other things as well. Firstly, there seem to be more files affected now than there were before Christmas, although that is possibly my imagination as I didn't take too much notice. Secondly, in Grid View, the filename as shown in the Tooltips has "+JPEG" appended to it (e.g. "UWRA03-163.JPG+JPEG"). The filename shown above the filmstrip, though, is correct.

Very strange...
