Lightroom problem #7

Edit My Images
No
I seem to have lost all the edits to the images I'm storing on my external HD.

When I click on anything in the J drive, I just get "Imported 08/02/10" in the history panel on the LHS. I think that may have been when I transferred all my stuff on to the new PC, but not sure.

In order to get the edits, I need to go to the .lrcat backups, and if I click on one before 08/02/10 I get the edits. But I can't, for example, move those edited files to a collection started since then.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, I've read the question a few times and don't know what you are asking...

When you transferred the images across, did you either write the metadata to the XMP (or DNG file)? Or if not, did you copy the catalog across? Lightroom uses non destructive editing, so your image files are not changed. Lightroom stores a list of changes to apply to your files, then applies them onscreen/on export.

Hi,

I don't think I actually moved them. Its the ones on the External HD that have lost their edits.

I have to go to a back-up catalogue pre-dating the "import" to get access to the edits. I can't just open LR, and click on the files; all I get are the RAW files.

Have never used XMP or DNG files....

Did you have your lrcat file on the external disk as well?

OK, so you have all the files on an external drive, but have had the lrcat file on two separate computers?

Lightroom does not change your files, it stores a list of instructions to apply to your files in the lrcat file.

My suggestion would be to open up your backed up lrcat file, this should give you all edited pictures prior to the date of the back up.

If this is the case, then go back into your main catalog and remove all of the images from prior to the back up from your new catalog (remove from catalog, but keep files). Then use the "Import from catalog" feature to import the images and edits from your backed up catalog.

Just to update you as I said i would.....

I took this problem to "Lightroomforums.net" and over a period of time got very detailed advice on how to remedy it. Step by step in the simple terms that I need, plus a little bit of telling off for being so silly.....

I think in the end, with help from one guy on there, I did more or less what you advised. It must have taken hours of his time. I couldn't recommend that forum enough for detailed help with Lightroom problems.

thanks again, jerry
