With many image files now in the 80+mb per image region is it realistically not viable to store images on internal drives? I suspect there are a number of factors in this

eg what kind of internal drives; HDD that are now in the 18TB+ region or internal SSDs that are in the 4Tb region (yes 8 TB ones are available but in the $700+ region
or do most people store files and catalogues on external SSDs, 4Tb externals are now relatively cheap and with USBc data transfer rates are fairly quick to access

Thoughts on LR image storage and considerations for each?

A major consideration is "how do you back up the backup"?

A single backup is good but two backups are better and more are better still. I'm a pessimist, so I have five copies of my data. You need to be thinking about your appetite for risk above all else.

Well yes, thats the next level whether internal or external, a back up process. I suspect if you use internal then its a manual backup from internal to external, but if external then a RAID array will accommodate but then you need to understand how to setup an auto backup RAID system

I have used internal HDD's, having a 2tb just for pictures for many years. When I made my new PC last year, I updated to a 4tb NVME drive just for the images. I back up everything on the PC to an 8tb HDD. I have portable 2tb HD that has the most important images backed up on.

I'm guessing you don't rattle through lots and lots of images then ie not sports photography?

I do sometimes take pics of sport, most weekends during the summer, and with 20fps, the images can rack up. ;) I came back from holiday the other week with 2.5k+ images. I am in no hurry to sort/process my images though. :)
