Hi all, ok I can get around lightroom much quicker these days, getting to grip with lightroom and getting some good results.

Back to my problem, shoot with a ids mark 3 on to a compact flash card, i shoot in raw but as you know there is a small jpg embedded, but no change there, when i import in to lightroom i also choose to backup to my external hard drive which it does however when you go in to your external hard drive (x) and open the folder Each image has a cr2 that i presume is the raw file as it is always around 25mb per image then you have a jpg file next to it which is around 2.5mb then you have a xmp file which is about10kb.

Anyway I always choose standard when importing and i do not want the clutter of this seperate xmp file, all i really want is a raw file, I get the xmp file once you have edited the image in lightroom. also one other question is the raw file normally called cr2.

Regards Steve

Different brands of cameras generate different extensions for Raw files. Not always but mainly. Canon generate CR2 files.

Interesting link about XMP files -> Here...

yes canon has cr2, but i think you do not understand this file is created at the import images stage and instead of me having one raw file with a jpg if selected in the camera (raw+jpg) i also have this xmp file, when you have made the changes in lightroom and exporting i understand that you get the option there to create a seperate xmp, but not before there must be a setting somwhere in the impotr menu that needs unchecked but cannot see it.

The best way to get rid of the XMP files is to convert to DNG on import, that way the metadata is embedded within the file and you have the added bonus of slightly smaller file sizes. DNG is still a raw format so you aren't losing any data.

If you want to get rid of the XMP files for the existing files in your library you can convert them to DNG too.
