As per the title,

Currently when I insert my SD cards into my laptop, Lightroom 6 (not CC) automatically opens and give me the choice on what images to import from the SD card. All my files/lightroom catalogues are currently on the C drive on the laptop and when I have finished processing an image in Lightroom I export them to a created folder on an external hard drive. This is all getting a bit much for my laptop C drive (no space left). So, what I would like to do is:

1. Have Lightroom not open automatically when I insert the SD card
2. Transfer the files from the inserted SD card onto the external hard drive
3. Manually open Lightroom and select/import the files that I transferred to the external hard drive

Plus I need to transfer all the images/catalogues that I have on the C drive to the external drive and have Lightroom being able to open them from there.

Can someone please give me a step by step guide on how to do this?

i know its annoying when people don't answer the question you ask....

but it sounds like it may be best moving your image archive from your c drive to an external drive with more space. you can do this within lightroom folders section.

i would then still import the new photographs onto the c drive as it will generally be quicker to work on these photos there, and archive off as needed.

Answer to 1 - Go to settings > General > Import options> Select "Show import dialog when a memory card is detected"
Answer to 2 - you can choose the destination folder in the import dialogue.
Answer to 3 - you will not need to do this if you moved the files within lightroom (assuming I am understanding the question correctly.)

I would also keep the catalogue and preview images on the local c drive.
You will need to think about your backup strategy quite careful as you will now need to backup more than one drive.

Just to add an option to No.3.

If you want full manual control of importing files, another method is to have ALL your raw file folders contained within one master folder, import that, then from then on, when you've moved new files into it or its subfolders, just select the main folder, and "synchronise folder".

This is how I import. I can't be arsed importing from within lightroom, and like you, I HATE that auto import dialogue every time I put a memory card into my card reader. I manually copy new raw files from the cards, to the raw folder.. creating new appropriately named folders as and when needed, then sync the folders in lightroom. I do as much file management as possible in Windows, because it's better at it.

Once imported though (however you do it), manually moving stuff outside of Lightroom will probably lose your settings for that file, but as a means of getting stuff in, I much prefer this way.
