So I've just about maxed out my hard drive now and have decided to get an external drive and move all my images. Of course all my images (raws/jpegs) currently in LR are all linked up to my PC. When I move everything over, how do I re-link everything up again in one swoop or do I need to import every single folder again? What sort of process am I looking at?

Thanks in advance

hi bethy, just click your first image after the transfer it will say this item is missing. and ask do you want to search for it check yes, and do a manual search for the image. and it should ask to connect others from the same location hth mike

That easy?? Phew! :)

Cheers Mike!

Option 1) There is a very easy way of doing this (I used LR4). You came move your file directly inside of lightroom. In library mode, on the bottom left there is a directory with all your folder and hard drive. You can just drag and drop from an hard drive to another. LR will ask you to confirm that this will physically move the folder. Confirm and it's done.

Option 2) Otherwise not much harder just cut and past your folder into new hard drive. Then the folder have a interogation mark on them. You just need to right click and browse to new location.

Sometimes video are easier to understand than words for this kind of things. There plenty of tutorial on youtube.

Hope this help.

option 1 will take hours as your asking the pics to go through lightroom then back to the new drive.just drag and drop the whole folder from your pc to your new external drive and re-locate them in lightroom. much quicker :)

Don't really agree with you. The photo don't physically go through LR. Copy time is probably exactly the same.

Yes. Besides the process is the same.

PS. I'd prefer it if you didn't screw up the quoting to make it appear as if it is I writing the balderdash.
check the post its been corrected cheers mike xxxxx

If you do t within Lightroom you don't lose the links. Do it outside and you have to remake the links, right click, locate files.
If I can I do within Lightroom, it's much easier.

Drag the lot over from within Lightroom. Much much easier than doing it externally - ensures all the links still work and takes absolutely no time extra at all over copying outside. In fact, because you don't need to do the 'find missing files' piece, it's quicker.

Within LR is the easiest for me.

Never done this but all of the advice I've read about moving files says that where possible you should do it from within lightroom.
