Finally bitten the bullet and ordered a copy of lightroom, just to warn you all that when that little rectangular box arrives that you will be deluged with posts from me along the lines of either :-

a) why the blooming heck did none of you tell me of this wonderous programme earlier, for lo, I am suitably amazed and can process millions of images in a mere nanosecond!

or more likely

b) who the heck convinced me to get this pile of poo, I can't find anything and what the devil are all these ruddy buttons for! Arrrrgggghhhh where's the wine! :cuckoo::'(

Just so you are prepared:help: :help: :help:

Start with the wine and you'll be just fine.

I was a staunch Aperture user until a couple of months back when I found out it didn't work with my new camera.

Took the plunge into Lightroom and haven't looked back. So if I can get to grips with it from the perspective of already being indoctrinated by different system, you'll have no probs starting with a clean sheet.

Didn't you try before you buy?

I used to do everything in PS, since having LR2 99% of my pp work is done there finishing off in PS, it is a superb piece of software, I am sure you will spend many a happy hour in there!

Lightroom is the dog's gonads. I love it.

One thing I've been meaning to ask on here though recently, is - do other users find pics can look a bit soft sometimes when you're viewing or editing in the develop module, yet when you export them as a jpeg and just view in windows or whatever, or print them, everything is fine? (sorry to hijack your excitement!)

first time i tried LR i didnt give it enough time to sink in and i rejected it.

second time around i tried it during a period of no photography work so had more time to faff.. and its stuck ever since. wonderful bit of software.

Surprised you didn't wait for v3 but yes it's very good and as an image management goes, very useful.

Don't forget to back up your catalogue :)

I don't think v3 is due for another 6 months or so - always a bit risky to decide to wait for a release. Besides, Adobe are usually pretty good at providing updates for people who order the previous version after the new version is announced.

it will definitely be b) for a few hours, and then a) * a million....

couldn't live without it, seriously...

Let me know how you get on with it, photoshop and bridge seem to crash daily for me at the moment so I'm tempted by it too

Hiya BouncyMelons (love the name btw)

I have been referred to Lightroom too, and constantly get harrased as to whether I have downloaded or not.

I'm kinda the type 'old dog - new tricks' and a bit hesitant. So let me know how you get on and I will follow suit.

D :)

You will get frustrated by it's adjustment brush and print module though, they hog memory.

Keep on top of the catalogues and it will be fine.

Well I had my PC built specially with a processor on stilts and as much memory as I can cram on a motherboard so that should be OK :)

Lightroom is a non destructive method where you can apply the same adjustments to batches of images. For individual images photoshop is the daddy but for simple colour balancing and applications of presets then lightroom should help me cut my processing time as I can apply the same adjustment to a whole batch :)

One of my next acquisitions will be Light Blue Photo so it will be interesting to see how the cataloguing goes with them both. :)

Thanks for the tutorials I'll get watching :)

At FOCUS I enquired about LR3 with the guy due to launch it here in the UK, he was tight lipped but from a little probing I feel sure we will see it launched between Easter & the May BH.

Hi Alison,

Welcome to LR, here is a great resource for any questions http://www.lightroomforums.net/index.php I use LR for the majority of my work. However, LR does have limitations, adding a copyright is awkward, in LR3, will be sorted, adding text is "naff", and some say LR softens images...but I have not found this. That aside LR is quick and convient for mass processing and you can copy and past adjustments, and index your work which saves "a heck of time". I like most LR users I do my cropping, WB, preset work in LR and finish off in PS3 for sharpening and additional work like montages....

Ali - You'll lorve it!
Processing looks and crops can be copied and pasted onto all other images - The hours turn into minutes and you can then pass on these huge savings to your clients :D Have fun!

Welcome to the 21st century!! lol

What I really want it for is that application of white balance to entire sets of pics so if I shoot a reception I can WB the whole lot at once as I've had mixed results trying to use the batch process in CS3.

Looking forward to giving it a whirl when it arrives. I've had too many PC's fall over to go for a download, call me old fashioned but I like boxes with serial numbers on them i don't lose! ;)

Register your programs with Adobe and you can look up all your serial numbers online. Very handy as I know I'll never be able to find my LR1 serial - and I'll bet I'll need that for my upgrade to LR3 (via a LR2 upgrade).

Or download and use the serial number off the side of the box when it arrives ;)

Hate to tell you Alison but when it arrives the first thing you are going to have to do is download the latest 2.6 version of the web as only ver 2 will be in the box.:)

Ta Paul, had already figured that one out. :) I just like the reassurance of actually having a physical product. It makes life so much easier if you ever have to reinstall everything (I had to do it last year and it took me weeks to get it all back.

I now back up my ATN file so if I ever lose my CS3 again I can swap out the ATN file and I get all my actions back :)
