Yes
What are the drawbacks and benefits of obtaining Lightroom 5 either by downloading the software direct from Amazon versus purchasing the disc and then downloading yourself at home. I do not want to go the Cloud route!

Not sure what drawbacks are from downloading. DVD will install and then download the latest version anyway

Thanks Hugh. I have always tended to feel more secure having a dvd in my hand but I seemed to recall somewhere reading, cannot remember where, that there was a drawback with purchasing the disc versus downloading the software. Perhaps I am mistaken - not unusual!

I have to ask, why not the cloud route? Latest version always, plus full photoshop, useable offline, all for £10/month.

I can only speak for me, but LR is mine forever now. I can chose to take updates or not, rather then have them forced on me by the cloud and don't have anymore to pay. If I choose not to pay then the same version of the software will keep on working, as opposed to using the CC where it won't

Well, I understand your points, but actually it'll only work until the version you have no longer supports the OS you need/want to use, or until you want to change to a camera that's not supported. That certainly won't be "forever".

In fact CC even supports cross platform use/changes, whereas before you'd have to throw away one copy and buy another if you changed OS, or maybe even buy two copies if, say, you had an Apple desktop and a Windows laptop.

Also, even with CC, you're not forced to take updates. They are offered to you, much earlier than they'd be available under the old model, but you don't have to instal them.

But yes, you do have to be fairly sure you are likely to want future upgrades. If you are, it's a far more affordable and flexible system (maybe not if you ONLY want LR, not PS).

I know CC has been disliked by a lot, but I'd never have been able to afford PS without it, and if it protects Adobe's revenue from the thieves (70% of users I believe?), so it continues to be developed, I think it's a good way forward.

The normal license for Lr covers 2 computers and both versions are on the disc. TBH I can't think why I'd want a cloud version of the software and pay a monthly fee, particularly when I don't want/need photoshop etc and 1 years subscription will cover the full cost of Lr.

As for 'thieves', I've no idea what the real figure is for pirating Ps, but all those I've known have done it because of the prohibitive purchase price. For them CC is a good legal alternative, but it's not good that it's becoming the ONLY way.

adobe have said that LR would not be going down the cloud only route so thats a bit of a moot point.

download and burn to disk later if you like :) theres only a few quid in it anyway. download the trial and buy the disk and use the code from that.

either way works.

Depends where you buy it from too.
There are plenty of places around selling the full install DVD for much less than Adobe want to charge you for the download.
