Apart from buying the plugin, is there any way to deduplicate photos in Lightroom?

all photos are virtual copies in LR so why would you be concerned about data deduplication? what exactly do you mean by deduplication..

I have a currently disorganised file system. Many copies of each photo in different places.
I'd like to use a fresh hard drive to create a new library, and import all the photos (copy them) to the fresh drive.
Then, to remove all the duplicates I want to have a way of knowing which are duplicates - I think LR5 has this built in?
Then I can delete all the old photos and regain some order in my digital storage
The only issue is being confident that no photos will accidentally be deleted without having a copy on the fresh drive, and that no photos will be duplicated on the fresh drive.

If you have multiple copies of the same file with the same filename scattered across your existing drive, use lightroom to import/add to the new drive, and click the button in the top right that says something like "don't copy duplicates"??
