Yes
Something I have been wondering for a while.

When initially opening a RAW file (as soon as you import it into LR and then open it) the picture opens looking great.... but within a second or so the image "flattens" and loses its pop... My understanding of this is that the initial preview was the embedded JPEG and then the flattened Image is LR's rendering of the RAW file.

What I then tend to try next is going down to Lightrooms Profile's area, and changing it from Adobe 2012 on, to Camera Standard, Camera Portrait, Camera Faithful etc etc - until I find one I like.

Is this Lightroom's attempt to match the in-camera JPEG processing?

Also....something I found whilst browsing was Custom Colour Profiles which you can download off the web. I am just wondering if anyone uses these, and could offer any experience or feedback from using them, and what they do etc?

Thanks for any help

Yes - correct.

I have an X-rite colorchecker passport which can generate these profiles. If you want to see what sort of differences you can get, have a look at: http://photo.andysheen.co.uk/technical/lightroom-raw-vs-dpp-raw-processing/

I compare DPP, lightroom in house and my generated colour profiles.

You can also change the default processing parameters so that LR's initial version has the required 'pop'. Load up representative image, adjust it in 'Develop' until it looks good, hold down the 'Alt' key and watch the lower-right button change to 'Set Defaults'. Press that and all newly imported images will get the same treatment.
