Lightroom, convert RAW to Jpeg to save space

Hi all,
I have loads of RAW pics in my Lightroom catalogue & I am looking to save space.
I shoot RAW only (CR2) & pp from there. Essentially what I am looking to achieve is to convert the RAW to Jpeg whilst maintaining key wording etc & keeping the pics in the same folders. I will only be converting "happy snaps" that I have finished PP so I am not worried about loosing the benefits of RAW with these.
I have seen the "convert to DNG" option but that doesn't seem to offer any reduction in size.
Any help or suggestions would be great!

Hi, I bet if you sorted through your RAW files you would find many that you think "Why did I save that"?
It is the best work-flow to look at your photos after import and discard/delete any that don't say to you WOW!!
This is what tends to fill up drives IMO more than anything else the reluctance to delete photos that are really not worth keeping.
The other option is to install an additional hard drive or use portable drives to store your photos, just make sure that when you move them from your main drive to a second drive that you do it via Lightroom so Lightroom will no where they are.

There are hundreds of "why did I save that" pics, that is why I am looking at doing this. The issue is that rather than delete them I want to save them without using too much space so they are available for the family to look at. I have thousands of "happy snaps" that fall into this category.

Hi, Then use the other options I offered install a second Hard Drive or buy an external Hard Drive.

Export the shots as jpeg then delete from lightroom (after checking they have exported and backed them up) remember to delete from disk not just remove from lightroom.

I've just made ( and am still in the process of making) a couple of hundred quid from shots that I didn't delete during a news event last year. They were shot on a lens that needed servicing, in pouring rain and most of them are muzzy to say the least.

However, they happen to be pics of people that are currently in the news for a completely unrelated incident. At the time they were irrelevant, trash, photos.

I'm rather glad that I don't delete everything - or anything for that matter.

External storage space costs peanuts in relative terms.

I think, it's a bad idea.
If you're running low on space, it's much better to either add another disc or replace current with a bigger one. Harddiscs are *really* cheap nowadays...

I doubt, you can save that many MBs on converting, and if you're running your disc low on free space, other problems may arise...

At £50 for a 1TB external hard drive, why worry about space ?

I hear what you are saying guys and thanks for your input but I'm on a 3Tb external HDD at the moment & need to buy another to back it up.
The issue being the unnecessary size of the files, I have deleted the trash & rated & key worded the rest so I don't want to loose that. I just wondered if there was a quick way of batch converting & keeping all the keywords.

Chris....

If you export them from Lightroom as JPEGs, there is an option in the pop-up window to Write the Keywords as a Lightroom Hierarchy. Check this and it should do what you want.

I suggest you try a couple first to make sure you're happy with what it does.

Colin
