Hi folks, I've had lightroom 2 for a wee while now and am quite comfy with it but I've never had to bother too much with the ins and outs of catalogue stuff before so I have a few questions.

My secondary onboard drive which I use for photo storage is now starting to fill up and I'd like to move all my pics to a larger external drive (or two). If I do this and clear the pics from my onboard drive what effect would that have on my catalogue settings?

Would I have to import all the pics again from the external drive for the catalogue to be able to load previews of them or is there another alternative for me?

Tommy.

If you move all your photos around using the library window in Lightroom you won't need to re import. It'll keep track of all the moves and ensure and edits are also kept as well. Its very easy to do. Just do nothing outside of LR

:plusone: As said, you can use LR to move files and folders. That way it knows all about the moves and you loose nothing.

I recently did this and didnt use lightroom to move them, when I started lightroom it said they had moved and asked to find them, did it no problems, all as before

For safety sake don't move your images, copy them to the new location.

Then right click on the root folder of the original location, Near the bottom you'll get an option to "Update folder location" Select this and then navigate to the new location. LR then updates it's catalogue.

When you are happy everything is fine delete the original files. I suggest this as I've had LR throw a wobbler when moving large volumes of images from one drive to another. Fortunately had back up. But I move files this way now. Can't lose any as you can check Files out against files in

This is exactly how I'd do it, unless you already have and maintain a separate backup?!

You must have been stung real bad :(!

No just Paranoid. Especially when your images earn you money
