Yes
My LR3 catologue contains just raw files; when I export them, and then import them to another PC will I be able to move them to appropraite folders (which are years) on the new PC?

Sorry if this is a real dumb question!

if youre moving them between PC remember export will export a JPG (or whatever file you have specified) with the edits included and not the RAW file itself.

what exactly are you trying to achieve? a complete move of the cat or partial move etc?

thanks Neil: I'm backing up my (raw and jpg) photos from a laptop to a desktop; the jpgs were never added to the catalogue after processing from raw

Two ways of doing this. Either copy the RAWs plus associated xmp files to the new machine and then copy the catalogue, open (or import if you want it to be part of another catalogue) the catalogue on the other machine. Alternatively, export the catalogue as Neil has said and move that large directory and reimport.

When you are on the new machine, yuou can move the files within lightroom on the library page (drag and drop folders to new locations etc).

As long as you have the original files and catalogue on the old PC until you have the files imported on a new PC, you won't have lost anything as you can always go back to the original PC if anything gets messed up.

+1. As discussed i would export as catalogue and then import them into the new machine.
