I have recently updated my Mac - I was very behind with updates, having read too much about disasters when changing OS through upgrading. Anyway, I have sorted out some of the issues that have come up since eg unresponsive Wacom Tablet but I now keep getting a message:

"Catalog size is more than 4GB. Your catalog size is larger than 4GB. Please use a 3rd party utility such as.... to extract your catalog backup."

Each copy in the folder LIGHTROOM of the backup is about 280MB.

I clearly don't understand what is going on so could someone explain to me, in simple terms, what is going on?

Thank you.

Backup file, because it is larger than 4gb, has been compressed. Just use an unzipping utility and then load into Lightroom.

Hi - thanks for taking the time to reply. I don't think I explained myself well. I want my catalogue to keep backing up but this message means that it hasn't since Christmas. I don't understand why that is and how to keep backing up my Lightroom adjustments. Could you tell me anything about that problem, please?

The backup compresses both the database and the preview files. The message that the combined size of the backup is over 4GB and will be "zipped" to save space. If you press continue, it should proceed with the backup. What may be a bit disconcerting is the short delay before snything apears to happen. The backup operation is doing something in the background. It should then proceed as normal and place a backup in the designated location. This will be a .zip file. Provided you have a suitable unzipper , and there are several free ones available.) when unzipped you will get all the files back that were in the original database, including the previews.

I have mine set to backup each time Lightroom closes, This way I can either let it back up, or cancel if I've made little or no changes. I tend to keep only three backups, deleting the unwanted ones from time to time

Thank you... I will look at unzipped software. Is there one you can recommend?

Mine started this a few weeks ago (mac). I found an article telling people not to worry. I checked the box not to remind me anymore. It still backs up every day (or every time I exit LR).

I didn't download anything. I'll find the article for you. It was someone trusted (Laura Shoe or Julianne Kost...someone like that) not any Tom, Dick or Harry.
