I've got two copies of one batch of images : one on my hard drive, and one on my back-up drive.

Unfortunately all the Lightroom edits point to the back-up drive.

How do I transfer the edits to the files on the hard drive?

I'm sure it must be easy.......but

From what I understood this wouldnt work? If i remember rightly you have to use the import/export dialogue to get a consistent and stable library set up. I have edited all mine on the laptop and need to make space but I dont want to lose the RAW files, so i dont know if that makes the issues slightly different, but to keep all the edits once I move everything to the external HDD I am going to have to export using LR to do the leg work.

I haven't had time to link up the images with the instructions yet. But I'm still hoping Neil's solution will work and will report back when I've tried it.

One thing I have read recently goes against the grain of my previous understanding of Lightroom.

It has always been said that you should ALWAYS move your files around within Lightroom to avoid the dreaded "cannot find file" scenario.

The latest thinking, I gather, is that in some circumstances if you do this there is a possibility of losing everything. One situation would be if for some reason LR crashes during the move, because it doesn't leave a copy of the files in the original place.

It is now recommended that if you have a big "move" to do you should do it in Windows, re-link LR to the newly moved files, and only then delete the files from their original location.

Not sure if that was relevant to your point, dTea, but it might be worth bearing it in mind.

Thanks for that info as that is indeed how I would have moved it and it is a reasonable sized library so God forbid anything happened to it. I will move a back up copy over using Windows and do some more reading before i actually move it all to the external. I appreciate the heads up.

if its a one off as the OP suggests then should be fine. not really recommended long term, you could end up in a right muddle.

in your instance a better solution would be a larger external hard drive for your RAW then you dont have to keep shifting files about.

i cant remember but export wont save the original image with edits, unless you export the catalogue?

Cheers, I have a got a large external HDD, but was solely make a windows copy over to the drive using windows. Out of interest does lightroom use a swap file on the laptop to show processes or does it continually access the external HDD? And apologies for going off topic to the original thread!

Well, I seem to have got it sorted (famous last words......)

I ended up with two copies of each image on the C drive, each one placed next to its twin.

So I had to go through the whole lot (nearly 1100) deleting alternate images.

But fingers crossed......

I tried that first. I got a message telling me there was already a copy of that file in the catalogue. Mmmmmm......

And then - would you believe it - I can't remember exactly what I did next. I think may have been locate missing files or something.

But the upshot was that the folder complete with edits arrived on the C drive. See above.

A certain amount of hilarity reading this! Sorry, J. The downside of LR to me is that its database functions are completely non-intuitive. I feel the same way about all office programmes too. Maybe I've got the wrong brain type?

it should have just reattached to the new location. assuming you disconnected your backup drive. also you didnt try to re-import.
