Lightroom & backup

You can do this in two ways.

One Select the folder you want to export, then right click and select "Export as Catalogue". When presented with the file location options choose the destination and click the Export negative files box.

This copies the files with a Lightroom catalogue. You can then reopen the catalogue in Lightroom.

The alternative is to select all the images in the folder, then export as DNG files. The DNG will have the Lightroom adjustments applied.

Then burn to DVD

My vote would be to export as DNG, just select the folder in the Folder viewer in the Library module, then export.

You've forgotten to mention the third way. Make sure xmp files are created, then just burn them and the corresponding RAWs (or folders) to dvd. I prefer converting to DNG at the very beginning, before importing in to LR.

Was wondering this myself - seems a major flaw in what is a good piece of software. Basically, they should just have a back-up button that links to a specific HD and exports the catalogue and images together.

At the moment I'm backing up via Time Machine (so everything on my MBP copies as it appears) and backing up the LR catalogue so all changes are up to date.

mine does do that I think, either way the file sizes matched and my cat isn't 200gb :D

I think that's what Aperture does with its vaults feature.

The way I back up Lightroom (other than Time Machine AND Mozy) is to create a second copy of all the files on import (from within the import dialog) and every week I get reminded to back up the catalog, I do this to the same drive as I back up the images. Simples.

So what does backing up a catalogue give you that backing up Raw+XMP/DNGs doesn't? I've ignored existing catalogues or deleted them with total disregard. When I've wanted to revisit a particular collection, I just import the folder, or sometimes individual photos, and I'm back where I was with the original catalogue. I might create a catalogue with a specific photo folder and use that one now and again, but I would never bother to back it up and I don't care if I delete it. None of my work is lost. Am I missing something?

I'm not too sure on that one, I've not got my LR book up here either, so can't really check that out. I guess it depends on how much you value your catalogs, I keep all my main images in the catalog so want the catalog backed up.
