I'm fairly new to Lightroom and haven't really had time to figure it all out and I know it will take time but when you shoot in RAW and then import into Lightroom, do you get the same settings as when you open a RAW in photoshop? I'm obviously not looking properly but I had a very quick look earlier and can't see anything different between JPEG and RAW, you get tonal settings, HSL etc on both

No. A raw looks dull compared to the camera processed JPEG and you need to develop it. The closest you can get to the picture styles (for Canon) is to use the drop down in the develop menu. You can generate a preset based on this and apply it on import. You might like to read this: http://photo.andysheen.co.uk/technical/lightroom-raw-vs-dpp-raw-processing/

It may be too in depth but shows a couple of the tradeoffs you have when developing raw images.

I've been using LR3 about 4 weeks now and am pretty impressed with the default settings.

Just about the only adjustments I ever need to make are WB and exposure.

There are a whole host of other sliders which can do very "exotic" effects but as I say WB & exposure is about all I ever need to adjust.

Thank you all guys that's cleared it up for me and those links were brilliant and just what I was looking for :-)
