Lightroom 6, saving GPS position back to original raw files.

After I've used the "Map" module to manually add the GPS position to the exif data in my images, it only saves the data to the LR copies of the image, unless you actually use the "Save the Metadata to file" menu option. This works perfectly for JPG's. However, for RAW files, it doesn't save the data back into the actual RAW image/files, it creates an "XMP" sidecar file. Is there a way to save the GPS exif data back into the RAW files themselves? I don't want all these extra XMP files cluttering up my painstakingly created file system.

Doubt it. LR never makes changes to the raw file.

If you convert the raw file to a DNG then the changes will be written to the DNG instead of a xmp file.

Be very careful trying to alter RAW files - you can make them unusable.

Having said that you could try exiftools but ALWAYS try anything like that to a COPY of your RAW files!

Back when I used to use Photoshop (10/12 years ago) there was an option in Preferences as to whether Photoshop saved details in a separate XMP file or embedded in the RAW file. Does Lightroom not offer that option?

Yes, but it will only save to Adobe raw format which is DNG. If you are using any other raw format, xmp files are your only option.
