I see the official Lightroom 5 has been released and is now available for download. Are there many beta users within TP that have experience of the upgrade from 4?

It seems to be about £57 to upgrade, and about £102 if you've never owned a LR version before..

Some of the new bits seem interesting - but wonder how they perform in the hands of real photographers.

If any beta users have been playing with it - maybe they can give an insight compared to their use of LR4?

I have a creative cloud account so just downloaded LR5. I had a quick look but didn't spot anything that had changed yet.

From a 5 minute play with it:

- Upright is a very cool feature, it corrects keystoning quite well
- Fuji X-Trans RAW files are demosaiced faster and I seem to be able to pull in more detail from highlights.

I tried the beta and it seemed ok - I am still on LR3 and cant see myself updating any time soon though.

The keystone correction feature is great, provided it is used for exterier shors of buidling , it really struggles if you through an interior shot at it

I'll be trying this on Wednesday, will download from CC. Any improvement on performance at all?

I tried the beta but to be honest there was nothing there that I would upgrade from L/R4 to do especially at the upgrade price stated above £57.
If you need to adjust keystoning have a look at DXO Viewpoint if you can find a promo code it comes in less than $79 approx £50. Much better for fixing keystoning IMO

I agree about the keystone correction feature and the extra capability of the spot healing is welcome (although still a little basic). The Smart Preview feature may well prove to be useful if initial workflow is done 'in the field' on a laptop. But overall not a sparkling release.

My reason for hopping onto your posting was to ask about your point on not upgrading from ver.3.xx. Unlike ver.5 the changes in ver.4 in terms of the improvements via Process 2012 did make this a significant upgrade and obviously those improvements remain in ver.5.

Anthony.

Money is the main thing, and I only really use LR to crop, White balance and do a few other small things with. Suits me perfectly at the moment

Had a quick play and, while basic, the extra capabilities of the spot healing tool will be very handy for working with scratches in film scans.

When I changed from 3 to 4 I had all kinds of problems with the way it handled previously edited files.. I wouldn't want the same issues going from 4 to 5....

Downloaded mine from CC Catalog updated. The new uprights & healing brush alone make the upgrade worth while.

It looked like a waste of money going by Adobe's page but this article makes it sound a lot more worthwhile.

The selection bug linked above is a huge deal though.

That bug seems quite a flaw - wonder how long it'll take them to fix it...

downloaded the trial and so far i like it, seems faster than 4 and like the improved clone, not had a chance to have a play with the upright feature as yet, took me a whilst to find the b****r :thinking:

will give it the 30 days before deciding if i think its worth the extra dosh for these 2 "features", like others i think this is really a ver 4.5

The export bug is a bit of a doozy. Reduce size below about 1/3 and lose sharpening and nr

Update on the selection bug here.
Thanks for the update. After reading that, I went back to trail version of LR5 and its usability have improved vastly.

On my first go, LR4 catalogue was imported and I suffered from the selection bug extensively. Select a photo in grid view, film strip doesn't change and pressing D goes to the one selected in film strip.

I gave it a go again last night and the problem didn't manifest itself. It probably was due to the import. Without the selection bug, LR5 seems a pleasure to use, it felt faster than LR4.

So I think I'm going to upgrade when this bug is confirmed fixed by that plugin developer. (he's Publish Catalogue is the only plugin I use, and depend heavily upon)

And all other plugins still operational? Any issues there yet from anyone?

I have a question. Is it possible to install Lightroom 5 and only use it for new work, leaving Lightroom 3 (in my case) and all it's catalogues/adjustments alone?

You can start a new catalogue for LR5 and leave the old one for 3

If I understand this selection bug properly, I had it in LR4, too, when selecting an image in the grid view, instead of in the slides strip.

From then on I made sure that the right slide was selected, and nothing bad ever happened.

Hence, I personally think these 'your images could be deleted' fears are a bit exaggerated. It doesn't seem to have happened to a lot of people, because I'm sure we would have read about this on the net. And who doesn't have a backup of their images anyway? I have three backups, two on disk, one on Blu-ray disk. It just costs me a few seconds to create them.

So while this bug is not nice, the consequences for our real work are not as dramatic as some make them sound.

Hows the develop module startup (i.e. first time you go into it). There's a couple of secs delay in LR4, which I know some users with slow machines complained about.

I find it similar to LR4.4, but I do find the whole thing a little snappier in general. I'm using the smart previews and they do seem to speed up the develop module on my pc. (i5, 4Gb RAM, 500GB HDD). I wasn't sure about doing the upgrade from LR4.4, but the trial version of LR5 was definitely a little quicker for me so I just bought it. That was enough for me.

Currently having problems having upgraded from 3 to 5. Having imported all of my pictures and used the latest backup all the work carried out to everything doesn't show.

I don't think I transferred it properly from my pc to mac in the first place so going back over old ground. I thought a simple paste would do it, obviously not.

Have you transferred the catalogue file across as well? Changes in Lightroom are saved in the catalogue by default, not in the image files or sidecar files.

Hi Darren,

Yes I have but it still hasn't carried it all across. I've even restored as per my last back up but all my dng files are flat with no adjustments. Lost the will with it now really, it seems that there could be a problem going from 3 to 5...

This seems as good a place as any to ask this: I currently own LR4 and I want to upgrade to 5, but at the same time I'm also going to be moving from one PC to another. Does the upgrade option allow me to do a clean install, or do I need to install LR4 and then upgrade over the top?

Thanks.

EDIT: Asked on the Adobe forums, and I can do a clean install. \o/
