Lightroom 4 photos missing

Hi chaps - I'm really struggling with Lightroom, so much so that I do NOT move folders inside the Lightroom folder in 'Pictures' (I'm on a Mac) ... I cannot believe there are pictures missing, I'm not sure that I can get them back from 'time machine' it's so frustrating, I'm also pretty sure I've never created a catalogue but there in the LR folder is catalogue 4 if I try and open it I get "The Lightroom catalog named “Lightroom 4 Catalog” cannot be opened because it is too new to be used by this version of Lightroom. Would you like to select a different catalog?" - where also please are all the backups Lightroom keeps telling me it's made and how can I search them please ... any advice very welcome.

I hate to ask the obvious question but which version of LR are you using to open the catalog?.

Even if your catalog is corrupt your photos will be OK
 
Gosh Hugh, that was quick ... OK I'm going to come up to London today with a bit of 3" x 2" wood and ask you to hit me hard over the back with it ... I can't believe it you were totally right ... I had opened LR 3 ... I don't know how my shortcut to LR 4 managed to change itself but that was probably down to me doing something stupid.

I suppose "cannot be opened because it is too new" was a bit of a clue ... I shouldn't blame software so quickly for things like this ! ... many many thanks - Roger
