Having just installed Lightroom v4, I'm wondering how other people use it on their older images.

Would I be correct in thinking that its main advantage (as far as processing is concerned) seems to be more precise processing of images with difficult highlight and shadow areas?

If so is it worth re-processing older images with only a limited range of contrast?
 
LR 4 does seem to be able to get more out of the shadows/highlights than older versions.
It is well worth looking at favourite images and revisiting the processing.
 
There were some good comparisons on the big Lr4 release thread on here showing images processed in Lr3 and revisited versions done in Lr4, the subtlety and effectiveness of the highlight and shadow recovery are noticeably better through Lr4.

Is it Lr3 you used to use?
 
Yes, v3.6.

I'm really just wondering if people are finding it worthwhile to re-process images with a "normal" range of contrast in them. Or if it is only those with tricky highlights and shadow areas .....

When v3 came out I tended to re-process everything.
 
The processing algorithms in LR4 are completely different to those used in LR3 and earlier. My experience is that in some cases reprocessing does give a better image, but not in all cases.

Generally speaking I now leave all my "Older" images alone unless I'm going to output them, then I'll take a look and see if I can improve them. It tends to down to the image itself. Often you tend to make slight adjustments anyway when you re visit an image, so I may have made some changes in LR3 anyway:)

Absolutely.....

It's going to be quite a learning curve getting the best out of v4, I feel. I found v3 so easy to use. I just wonder if the new processing tools in v4 are going to that much of an advantage in most cases.

They may not make a lot of difference for some images, but I do think the highlight and white's controls work better than the Highlight recovery and Light controls in LR3. They do seem to enable you to get more tone in highlights without them going muddy. The Shadows controls works as well if not better than the fill light in LR3.

All in all a better set of controls, and now with soft proofing. If it made tea and coffee plus did the washing up it would be perfect :)
