Hi
Like a lot of people I find Lightroom 4 so slow and bug ridden that I am now looking for an alternative.
I'd love to hear suggestions from people who have found a similar quality program that isn't full of bugs, and doesn't take all day to do the things it can do.
Thanks in advance!

Instead of using process version 2012 - select 2010 which puts all the sliders back to LR3 styles .... much quicker and still allows you to load raws from all the latest cameras

Little bit OT, but am I the only person who really likes LR4? The new sliders and features just seem to make sense to me, to the point where it really annoys me going back to 2 at work.

Using 4.3 FWIW.

LR4 speed is very computer system dependant ... and it seems random why it works OK on some systems and not others

If you remember it took about 3 versions of LR 3 before it was right

I love LR4 but prob mainly because I upgraded my computer at the same time! LR3 was soooo slow on my old laptop - LR4 flies on my new computer - no delays. And I love the new sliders.

Lr4 is fantastic - I do have a fairly speedy system and my catalogue is on an SSD which helps a little - With the latest updates I find it pretty fast (was slow when I first got it)

Is it possible to install a trial of LR4 then go back to LR3 with no issues regarding catalogues etc? Do I need to reimport stuff to LR4 for the trial?

As long as you don't update your LR3 catalogues to LR4 you are fine

Little point in having V 4 then?
I love the new sliders, I love how LR 4 works, I just hate the sluggishness and the bugs.
Not heard of RAWtherapy, need to check that out.

Lightroom does have it's share of issues, the biggest is it varies hugely from one computer to another, I've seen it work perfectly on quite a low spec machine, and then on a top of the range massively spec computer it runs like a two legged dog, even two identical machines it will run differently.
I've been lucky myself, it's worked fine for me, if anything even faster than v3, but I can't say the same for some friends, I know of two people who simply gave up and went back to v3 because v4 was virtually un-usable (and that on decent computers) Hopefully it'll get sorted by LR5.

Mine is painfully slow too, I can about 1-2 sec lag doing anything.. I have an i3 with 8gb RAM.. just upgraded to win 8..

I've never even had a single crash from lightroom, running an i7 2600K processor and 16 gig ram, it is also very dependant on your hard disk read/write speed and even without an SSD the speed has been fast here. Also depends on how many other things run in the background.

The current version of Lightroom is 4.3.

I have used Lightroom since the beginning and it has steadily improved version-by-version. The current version works well for me - although I admit to using only the Library, Develop and print modules regularly.

Anthony.

First thing I do is remove the other modules from display, its all library and develop for me.
The only lagging I notice is changing photos can take a few seconds, deleting- removing from disk often has to be repeated as it says cannot perform action first time and when using the brush, mask seems very slow and jumpy.
But I am on a laptop and not a top end one at that.

The only lag I ever see is t.he 3-5 sec delay when you first open the develop module. For best performance you have to look at where you put your cache files, catalogue, raws etc.
I have the program installed as usual on the c drive, the cache on another drive (with the backups), the catalogue on another. This years raws are on another fast drive, with previous years raws and exported jpegs on another large couple of drives.

I haven't ssd's but have 4 fast 600gb hybrid drives, 2 large sata drives and 16gb ram with windows 7 64 bit.

LR4 is sluggish for me too. Not terribly so, but when I open an image, the low res version takes about 1-2 seconds to res normally.

I've been using LR4 for some time and love it! However I'm now up against deadlines so I supercharged my mbp by fitting 2 ssd drives at great expense. It opens faster but it's still slow to use. I'm having to use photoshop's acr for my editing. I'm sure an update will come out for it soon.

Absolutely love LR4. Not slow at all. Reasonable spec PC as well.

Quad core Mac, 32 GB of Ram. Very fast SSD for system drive and scratch, catalogues go on a separate SSD drive and raws on a fast spinning metal drive. I try to stay out of develop module as much as possible and have read pretty much all the tips on speeding it up (and acted on those that seemed evidence based).

It's now more or less tolerable.

When I get time I'll look at Capture 1 because it seems Adobe can't be bothered fixing LR. I'd rather be a photographer than an unpaid tester and systems engineer.

Nope i love it. The new sliders allow far more fine control than the older process features.

Performance in 4.3 is markedly better than the RC for me. Its still a little slow but perfectly usable.

I had to use LR3 a few weeks ago and realised i now hate it!

Well I have downloaded the trial and I have so far encountered no speed issues compared to my LR3 version.

Now add a gradient and tinker with the clarity....

Just did that and instant response....

When the first update came out (4.1) I was clicking the spot removal tool and waiting about 3 seconds for each click!! But that was sorted quickly. Now no issues at all.

I had my custom build system built around LR4, so that it's a dream to run with plenty of memory on tap with a speedy processor.
my old pentium 4 struggled to run PS elements 8, it would literally freeze !!!

Jumping in here but can anyone recommend a decent off the shelf laptop for running LR4?
I'd far prefer to use PC than Mac as well.

I recently upgrade to a Acer i3 with 8gb of ram and LR4 is now superb.

Has anyone tried a fresh install? I upgraded from LR3 to LR4. I might install from scratch and see if it's any better
