Edit My Images
No
Hey guys so i have imported my RAW images in lightroom and made all my edits, i can not seem to export them in high raw format to my desktop. When i try to do this all i get are the non edited originals. Can someone please help me with this as i have now exported them in JPEG format which works however each each file is now only 506 meg in size.

Someone's going to explain this better than me I'm sure but I'll have a go in any case :)

The Raw file is what the software uses to produce your jpeg. When you open a raw file in photoshop you will edit it and save it but it just remains as the raw file. With your edits you export the image as a jpeg. The same happens with Lightroom.

[Edit] Further to this ... :D ... Lightroom keeps a copy of your edits as part of it's library so the raw file stays as its original form.

I think!

A RAW file is the original 'data' file. If you export in RAW format then you're only ever going to see the original unedited file again. Hence why your retouching isn't being applied. You need to export in JPEG etc in order to apply the editing to the file.

Each JPEG file you exported is 506mb? Are you sure? That's half a gigabyte. I presume you mean 506kb. If so, then check your export settings, as you've probably got a file resize option selected.

Watch this video tutorial of mine which should explain it all.

Why do you want to edit them in raw format? The only place they can be used is in Lightroom (or a similar package).

If you do genuinely need to export them as raw files then you've got 3 options:
  1. If you haven't done any editing at all - including import presets, camera calibration and so on - then use windows explorer to copy the files elsewhere.
  2. Select the files you want and do 'File | Export selection as catalogue'. Check 'include negatives' This creates a new catalogue with the raw files and the edits
  3. There's an option somewhere to save the edits inside the raw file as a metadata block instead of a sidecar *.xda file. You could check that, but it may slow LR down. If it isn't checked already then you'll need to select 'save metadata to file' for the relevant files, I think it's Ctrl + S. This will allow you to copy the raw files using windows explorer and then open them again in LR with the edits intact but without exporting the whole catalogue. You need to be careful not to overwrite those edits when importing; I can't remember the exact procedure.

CTRL+E will export a file to your pre-determined further processing software e.g. photoshop.
It's usually actually exported as TIFF.

CTRL+Shift+E exports as JPG, TIFF or DNG (plus some others probably)
You can decide at this point if you want the full size or resized version.
DNG is effectively a modified RAW file if you want I guess.

I'd forgotten about DNG. That'd work.
